Following the massive success of their debut,
Moodfood, studio maestros
Moodswings, consisting of Fred Hood and
Grant Showbiz, returned with their 1997 follow-up,
Psychedelicatessen.
Moodfood was a breath of fresh air, and a tough act to follow, but
Psychedelicatessen manages to live up to the high expectations created by that record. The duo incorporates steel drums and concert pianists into tracks that envelope the listener, while creating a thoroughly engaging blend of dance, trance, pop, and rock. The best tracks are the aching "The Great Sound of Letting Go" and "God Knows What I Want." A stirring medley that blends
Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" with "Oh Happy Day" includes a glorious vocal performance by
Tanita Tikaram. Breathtaking.
